Photo Gallery | Mercedes Marathon: Kids Marathon

One thing we learned this morning: Birmingham has some promising young runners! Hundreds of school children from kindergarten through fifth grade braved cold temperatures to run the final mile in this innovative five-month marathon. The runners were released in descending grade order, with ten minutes between each grade. Fifth graders wore black, fourth graders sported yellow, third graders wore gray, second graders had on white, first graders were bright in blue, and the kindergartners stood out in red.

FOX6's Mickey Ferguson was the emcee for the event. We see him every day at the station but we barely recognized him bundled up! He and other volunteers kept the kids focused and entertained while they waited for their turn to race.
