BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- The open seat on Birmingham's City Council will remain vacant for at least the rest of this month.
Tuesday, Council President Roderick Royal denied a request to move up the deadline for applications. Former councilwoman Carole Smitherman resigned the seat she held for three terms back in January to take on her new job as a district judge.
Royal says the council will collect applications until the end of February and then interview candidates. They will appoint someone from that pool to fill the seat until elections later this year.
