BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- If you buy anything inside the city of Birmingham, you'll still be paying a 10 percent sales tax for at least the next five years.
Today the city council approved a five-year extension of the 1 cent sales tax increase originally put in place during the Larry Langford administration in 2008. That tax increase, along with a doubling of business license fees, was supposed to help pave roads, build parks, and expand mass transit and help build a new domed stadium.
The $33 million a year that the 1 cent tax increase generates is now being used as part of the city's general fund budget.
