BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- Birmingham police have arrested and charged a man with attempted murder after they say he dragged a police officer with his vehicle.

Mark Anthony Nelson, 48 of Alabaster, is being held on a $60,000 bond and is in custody at the Jefferson County Jail.

Police say that Jan. 6, an officer stopped Nelson in the 2300 block of 34th Avenue North. The officer asked Nelson to turn off his vehicle. When Nelson refused, the officer tried to remove the keys from the vehicle. AT that point, police say that Nelson began to drive off, pulling the officer along until he fell to the ground.

The officer was taken to the hospital for treatement of serious but non life-threatening injuries. Nelson was taken into custody Jan. 8 without incident.
