Family mourns for loved one killed in drive-by shooting | News

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- To add to Sunday's tragedy, one drive-by shooting victim was about to become a father again.

Birmingham police say as many as three cars may have been involved in Sunday night's drive-by shooting. The victims were shot on a front porch in the Tom Brown public housing community.

Robert McGlown, 34, was killed and just across the street from a makeshift memorial, his mother-in-law mourned his loss today.

"He was a good person, Robert was a very good person," Betty Burks said. "He was a sweet person. Anything he could do for anybody, he would do it. Why they killed him? I don't know. I don't know that. Because the incident that took place? All I know is he's dead."

In Burks' arms was Robert's 2-year-old son, named after his father. McGlown's common law wife is due to deliver their second child, a daughter, any day, and McGlown won't be here to meet her because these family members say they think the shooters mistakenly thought he was their target as he stood on a neighbor's porch.

"Most likely it was probably the wrong place at the wrong time," Burks said. "Was nobody aiming at him, he was probably just an innocent bystander."

Police haven't said whether they think McGlown was the target but they are asking for the public's help in finding leads. McGlown's brother-in-law added his plea for help today.

"I just wanna let them know, whoever did this to my brother, please come forward and help us catch this killer. Please."

The other two victims were treated and released from the hospital. McGlown's family spent much of today making funeral arrangements for his memorial service expected later this week.
